Every student at the International College of Naturopathic Science (ICNS) is supported from their first supervised case to the day they are signed off as competent. Approved supervisors mentor students on complex cases and review their case-taking with feedback, and progress is assessed against the competencies in a clinical logbook. For Bachelor students, a final exit examination confirms the clinical safety knowledge that practice depends on. Here is how that support works.
Supervised clinical learning
Clinical confidence develops through supervised application. In the Virtual Clinical Pathway, students observe experienced practitioners consulting with real clients, then conduct their own consultations under supervision.
Students are mentored on complex cases, observe expert case-taking and have their own case-taking reviewed by approved supervisors. Feedback supports their development and helps them apply their learning safely in practice.
Progress assessed against logbook competencies
Clinical Practice 1 (CP1) and Clinical Practice 2 (CP2) are assessed against the competencies in a clinical logbook, not a fixed number of hours. Students progress by demonstrating the required competencies.
Supervisors review students’ consultations, provide feedback, and sign off each competency when the student meets it. This occurs regardless of how quickly or slowly a student progresses. Supervision for CP1 and CP2 is included in the programme fee.
A final check for Bachelor students
Every Bachelor programme concludes with the Integrated Clinical Reasoning and Exit Exam module: a final assessment covering red-flag recognition and action, CAM-drug interactions, restricted substances in pregnancy, interpretation of pathology results, and communication with medical practitioners. It can only be attempted once all other coursework and assessments are complete. This applies to Bachelor programmes only.
The Advanced Diploma has no exit examination; clinical safety is assessed and signed off in Clinical Practice 1 and 2. Graduates also complete Research Evaluation, critiquing research papers and distinguishing treatment options with a strong evidence base from those without.
Individual hands-on experience
The Virtual Clinical Pathway is the complete clinical core of every ICNS programme. CP1 and CP2 can be completed remotely with full supervision, and an in-person placement is not compulsory. As students progress, supervisors may identify that hands-on experience would strengthen a particular student’s competence. Where that happens, ICNS discusses it with the student and agrees an approach suited to their needs. It is guided by ICNS on an individual basis, rather than a standard stage of training.
Supported to competence
ICNS supports every student through structured learning, supervised clinical application, feedback, logbook competencies and, for Bachelor students, the exit examination.
ICNS trains students to practise as naturopaths, herbal medicine practitioners, nutritional medicine practitioners and mind-body medicine practitioners and, through that training, as Integrative Health Practitioners. Programmes are delivered online and accredited across 36 countries through the International Institute for Complementary Therapists (IICT). Each Bachelor and Advanced Diploma is a full three-year programme, built on more than two decades of curriculum development, with intensive and part-time pathways available. ICNS prepares practitioners to work responsibly alongside GPs, with measurable, accountable outcomes within a defined scope of practice.

Your next step
Sign-off confirms that a student has received supervisor feedback, demonstrated the required logbook competencies and, for Bachelor students, completed the exit examination.
